The arts may be getting short shrift in schools statewide, but there is a budding renaissance among fourth graders at Rashkis Elementary. After a 14-week pilot dance program last spring that involved 110 Rashkis students, the North Carolina Arts in Action (NC-AIA) group sent four fourth graders (Hannah Davis, Miles Addison, Khalid Williams and Emily Kupec) to New York City for a month to attend the National Dance Institute's Summer Institute, headed by former New York City Principal Ballet Dancer Jacques d'Amboise. Says NC-AIA Executive Director Lisa Kang. "Ultimately, we want to bring this program to the children of North Carolina, but it all began here in Chapel Hill."
